I think my parents play an important role in my early education and they have made an impact on my later academic success. I’m very interested in reading because of my mother. I can still remember my mother used to buy various books to me when summer or winter holidays came. Since I was the only child in my family, my parents had to work during holidays and I often felt very lonely and bored during holidays. My mother would buy a lot of books ranging from world famous novels to Chinese classics so that I had something to do for couple of weeks. I still remembered the first novel I read was The Wizard of Oz. Since it’s a full-length novel for a 8-year old girl and there had many words and sentences I didn't know. After work, my mom taught me how to look up words in the dictionary and how to increase my reading speed. Gradually, I was not only more interested in reading but also grasped some reading skills.
Moreover, I am an independent person and good at critical thinking owing to my parents. Since I was not good at math, but my dad was really a math expert. When I encountered some math problems, I asked for dad’s help. Every time my father would say “I won’tell, because you should figure them out by yourself. Solving problems has a lot of fun”. On rare occasions, my dad would help me with some math problems but in the end he would ask me “Do you think my method is the best one? Can you think of some other one? Do you totally agree or partially agree with me?”From then on, I always try to see things from different perspectives. And I know there is no right or wrong answer for most of things in this world.
My family education indeed has some influence to my later academic interest. For one thing, as a graduate student, I found that I really like to do research. I can spend a lot of time on reading because this is one of my favorite things and I can gain a lot from others perspective. For another thing, I like doing empirical research because everyone is seeking the truth, but for empirical research, if some elements or the condition changes, the result may be completely opposite. All in all the most precious treasures my family give to me is independence and learning ability. Only in this way can we be closer to the truth.
